Brand themes
Paint every diagram the hosted service draws for your organisation in your company's colors. An owner or admin sets one to three colors in the portal, and the hosted MCP server, the REST API and publishing use them from then on.
TL;DR
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a brand theme? | One to three colors (primary, secondary and accent) saved on an organisation. Plotwork makes a whole palette from them, for the light and the dark picture. |
| Which plan? | Pro. The organisation's owner must be on Pro for the brand to be saved and used. The preview works on every plan, so you can see the result before you upgrade. |
| Who can set it? | The organisation's owner or an admin, on the organisation's Brand tab in the portal. Members and readers see the saved colors. |
| Which calls use it? | The hosted MCP server's drawing tools, the REST API's drawing routes, and publishing, both to your own library and to the organisation's. |
| Does the local package use it? | No. The local MCP server, the npm package, the command line and the GitHub Action always draw the built-in theme. Brand themes are part of the hosted service. |
| What never changes? | The red, green and amber that mean an error, success and a warning, the text and card colors, and the official AWS, Azure and Google Cloud icons. |
| Can an agent choose a brand? | Only among your own organisations. No tool takes colors. Your repository settings can name an organisation in brand.organization; a hosted call uses its brand when the caller belongs to it. Otherwise the hosted service picks the brand from who is calling. |
| What if something goes wrong? | The diagram is drawn in the built-in theme. A brand never stops a drawing. |
1. What a brand changes
A diagram uses a few tones to tell its parts apart. A brand takes the place of three of them, and lightly tints the frames and lines so the picture reads as yours.
| Brand color | What it replaces | If you leave it out |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | The blue tone, and a light tint in group frames, borders and lines | It is required. |
| Secondary | The violet tone | Plotwork makes one by turning the primary's hue, and it follows the primary when you change it. |
| Accent | The aqua tone | Plotwork makes one by turning the primary's hue the other way, and it follows the primary too. |
Each color keeps a readable contrast on both the light and the dark background. When a color would be too faint on one of them, Plotwork draws a darker or lighter shade of it there, and the portal shows the shade it will use.
Some things never change, so a branded diagram still means what it says:
| Kept as it is | Why |
|---|---|
| Red, green and amber | They mean an error, success and a warning in every diagram. A brand color that looks like one of them gets a warning in the portal. |
| Text and card colors | Text stays readable on every background. |
| Official AWS, Azure and Google Cloud icons | They are drawn the way each vendor publishes them. |
| Fonts | Every box is sized from the measured widths of Plotwork's font, so a different font could let text spill out of a box. |
2. Set a brand
- Open the organisation in the portal and choose the Brand tab.
- Choose a primary color with the picker, or type its hex code, such as
#2a78d6. Add a secondary and an accent if you want them. - Look at the preview. It draws a small flow and a small layered diagram in your colors, in light and dark, and it lists any color that is hard to tell apart or that looks like a status color.
- Choose Save.
To go back to the built-in theme, choose Remove on the same tab.
| Role | Can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | See, preview, save and remove the brand |
| Admin | See, preview, save and remove the brand |
| Member | See the saved colors |
| Reader | See the saved colors |
An owner on Free sees the preview and an upgrade link in place of Save. If the owner moves from Pro to Free, the saved colors are kept but not used, and they are used again when the owner is back on Pro.
3. Which calls use the brand
Only the hosted service applies a brand, because the colors are saved with the organisation in your Plotwork account.
| Call | Brand it uses |
|---|---|
| A tool of the hosted MCP server, or a REST drawing route, with an organisation API key | That organisation's brand |
| The same with your own API key, or an agent you connected by signing in | The brand you chose under "Brand for my diagrams" in the portal's Settings, while you are still a member of that organisation |
| Publishing to an organisation's library | That organisation's brand, whoever publishes |
| Publishing to your own library | The brand you chose in Settings |
| The local MCP server, the npm package, the command line and the GitHub Action | None: the built-in theme |
A published picture is drawn once, when you publish it. Changing the brand later does not change a picture that is already published; publish it again to get a new picture in the new colors.
You choose the brand for your own calls in the portal's Settings, from the organisations you belong to that have one. If you choose none, your own calls draw the built-in theme.
4. Privacy
A brand is organisation configuration, like its name. Plotwork stores the colors, the id of the account that last saved them, and when. Your choice in Settings is stored as your account id, the organisation's id and a time. No diagram is stored to make or apply a brand. See the privacy policy.
